how many frames is this , i read the elemental magic book volume 2(amazing book imrpoved my art in other areas just by reading it ) and when i try to references from there my explosions look kinda bad like this [link] 24 frames the effect was very rushed , but i feel like when i reference explosion from another anime screen shot picture and do my own thing it looks 10 times better

I was workin at 12fps on this one. In total there were 31 drawings/frames
(Though i'm starting to experiment with 24fps)
Since you were workin at 24fps, it probably is going to go really fast!
I guess it just depends a lot on your timing skills (it's a very hard thing to grasp, i'm still workin on it!)
I'd say get some anime reference, pause it and go frame by frame. Then you can actually see how and what they animate
to get their desired effect. (oh look at some actual ref of explosions too!)

Hopefully that's of some help!
